QUARTZ REEF
The largest quartz reef deposit in New Zealand lies beneath the vines at Bendigo Station. The historic gold town of Bendigo was mined from 1862. Quartz Reef was founded in 1996; the principal partners are Rudi Bauer, Trevor Scott and John Perriam. Comprised of two estate vineyards, totalling 30 hectares; planted in Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay, Quartz Reef vinifies wines of outstanding flavour and intensity. The key to this distinction lies in the maturing sun drenched slopes situated at Quartz Reef’s Bendigo Estate vineyard. All Quartz Reef wines benefit greatly from winemaker Rudi Bauer’s Austrian heritage exploring the many dimensions of the varieties.
Situated in the heart of the Central Otago wine region, Quartz Reef specialises in the creation of exceptional Methode Traditionnelle, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir, showcasing the proven winemaking talents of Austrian-born Rudi Bauer.
Quartz Reef has become the vessel for what Rudi calls his search to make wines which exhibit “a symphony of flavours” that “capture attention and entertain so that you forget everything else”. Rudi continues to enjoy and explore the Pinot Noir’s many dimensions, and the convergence of the old and the new wine worlds. Quartz Reef Methode Traditionnelle is fresh, crisp and lively and the Pinot Noir is firm and intense with notes of ripe black cherry, pomegranate and spice, also producing a Pinot Gris which is a dry textural style complimenting food of all flavours.
